In Another Life; Ch 1 of 7, PG-13.
Title: In Another Life Summary: An all-too-human Doctor begins to build a life with Rose Tyler, but old ghosts -- both real and imagined -- still haunt him. And there's only so much human life you can live without a name... Rating: PG-13. Notes: Completed fic, should be posted fairly rapidly over the course of the week -- I'm just getting the later parts beta'd. Primarily Doctor Who, but also incorporating some Torchwood without any extensive knowledge of Torchwood required. Who spoilers through Journey's End; no significant Torchwood spoilers. Thanks to: |

Vividcon!
I am not home yet (so no vid downloads until Wednesday, alas) but currently ensconced in a hotel in downtown Chicago, overlooking at the glowy hypnotic ferris wheel at Navy Pier and waiting for room service, after one of the most awesomest Vividcons ever. Life == \o/ I thought this was overall the strongest premieres vidshow since the second year of the con, and that continued into the challenge show. So so many good vids, omg. BTW, a small pre-lj-cut PSA, if you are lucky enough never to have heard the song Handlebars and don't know the lyrics, do yourself a favor and wait to read vid reviews/listen to the song until you have watched As I haven't had a chance to rewatch vids, I am going to be talking totally haphazardly about random ones that have stuck with me enough I have something to say about them without that -- mentioned here under the cut are Climbing Up The Walls, the Doctor Who Handlebars, and Supersmart from Premieres; I Want You (She's So Heavy), How Much Is That Geisha In The Window, and White America from Challenge; and Rasputin from Club Vivid. ( vids vids vids ) Aside from the awesomeness of the vids, I just had a really great time hanging out both with people I have known for ages and also with many I had either never met or never really gotten to chat more with, in groups large and small. It was not quite enough, because it never is, but it was lovely. ♥ And to put the, um, okay, I was going to go to a sundae place but that would possibly not work right in context here, so er, to crown the weekend, And with that, I am going to have a cup of tea and write a little fanfic and maybe see about hooking up a laptop to the TV here and watching some more vids. Yay Vividcon!

RPG/Drizzt/Forgotten Realms rambling, part the first
As some of you know already, I've recently been reading some old-skool RPG novels, mostly in an attempt to find out why the character of Drizzt Do'Urden is so incredibly popular. ( The answer is... ) |

Town Hall: Vidding and Visibility
Usually I post panel reports here and then link to them in the comms, but it seemed like a better idea to reverse the practice for the Town Hall on Vidding and Visibility. Also cross-posted to Man, it took forever to clean my notes up. I think I will watch vids now. |

Wikipedia Edit Wars: Return of the Rachel Brown edition!
I just got tipped off that the Wikipedia edit war over whether or not my book should be mentioned in the extremely worshipful entry on Meher Baba, which is fiercely policed by Baba-lovers, has re-ignited. Page down to "Rachel Brown's book": |

QUESTION!
I'm getting stuff ready to send to the Anime Weekend Atlanta art show. They don't allow the selling of fanart, although they do have a contest for fanart. So I'm sending ONE piece of fanart for the contest to be marked Not For Sale, and the rest will all be originals. So ... which fanart piece do I send? ETA: The intarwebs have spoken! Les Marchands it is! (Feel free to vote and comment as you will, though!) Poll #1244157 Which fanart picture do I send? |

Oh, what fun.
The TSA has issued a ruling on checkpoint-friendly laptop bags. I look forward to the ruling on checkpoint-friendly clothes, given that I was recently patted down in a gauze dress because "I can't see your form". If you want to avoid the extreme delay of grabbing your laptop out of your case, then repacking, you'll have to buy a new laptop bag, and one that won't function very effectively as a dual laptop bag-briefcase. However... TSA is not approving or endorsing any bag design or manufacturer and will only allow laptops to stay in bags through screening if they provide a clear and unobstructed X-ray image of the laptop. So. Buy a new laptop bag, but we may hassle you anyway if you guess wrong. See Overarching Guidance.

Death Trance!
You remember the glory that is Death Trance? Well, Ink Flute over on ff.net has gotten into the spirit of the think and notified me that she's got a small series of drabbles/shortfic based on it. (I think they truly come into their own in #5, with the introduction of The Hair.) I can't believe I don't have any Death Trance icons... |

Past and present (with bonus old-coot rant!)
My daughter is blossoming into a fashionista, more of one than I ever was. Then again, so is Barbara Bush. Anyway, she's experimenting with makeup and developing her own style. When she was (rightfully) annoyed at Stanford's admission question "How do you rejuvenate yourself?" she replied, accurately, "I paint my nails." Part of her own style is that she's shopping for her first serious purse as a graduation present. We hit Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. This year's statement bags are enormous, more hand-baggage than purse. My daughter couldn't find quite the right bag, so we'll keep searching. Old-coot rant: One of the places we hit was Coach. They had a nice striped purse in that plasticized fabric that is chic nowadays. Not only were the corners unprotected (and indeed the floor model had already begun to wear), but they hadn't bothered to match the stripes on the side. For $300. It's one thing to pay hundreds of dollars for a designer bag, but it used to be that the money bought you quality as well as the name. No more. Whoever took over and remade Coach decided that the only thing worth salvaging of the look was the signature stamped leather tag. No brass hardware, no thick leather (in any color or shape), and, of course, no durability. God knows the old look had become matronly, so I suppose it was time. Just for amusement's sake, I pulled one of my two old Coach bags from the charity bin. (I don't work in the banking industry any more, so I don't need them.) After ten years it still looked pretty much the way I bought it; a trip to the cobbler for a polish and it would look new, except for the tarnished brass closure. Out of curiosity I loaded it up with a subset of my normal purse and took it to work. I've been looking for something smaller -- and thus less weighty and better edited, I hope -- and this was quite comfortable. I'm going to give it a whirl for a couple of weeks. |

Quick notes before breakfast
Favorite premiering vid Themes and changes AAARGH. Had much longer comment on this, but erased it in edits. Anyway: improvement in number of vids featuring POC more incremental, but still noticeable. I counted 6 or 7 vids focused on an actor of color or on an ensemble prominantly featuring multiple actors of color plus 2 vids explicitly critiquing the absence of POC from media or fandom, and that's not counting ensemble or single-character or romance vids in which there was a significant presence of actors of color (i.e., there's an SGA vid which is John/Rodney but a really significant emphasis on team as family with real face time for Ronon and Teyla, a bunch of Torchwood vids focused on Jack with a team emphasis, etc.). |
